Tunisia is a generally tolerant and open society. In recent years it has developed an export-orientated economy and a strong tourist industry. However, religious and political freedom is restricted. The President and his ruling Constitutional Democratic Party allow for no political dissent. Expatriate Christians may worship freely, but overt evangelism is forbidden. Most national Christian Believers suffer harassment from their families. Some have been called to interview by the authorities, which is intimidating, but those who calmly stand firm for their faith are rarely beaten or imprisoned.
